The African Union (AU) has unveiled its Continental Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy, a comprehensive framework designed to propel Africa towards a prosperous, integrated future where AI serves as a cornerstone for inclusive growth, resilience, and socio-economic development. Rooted in the vision of the AU Agenda 2063, this strategy positions Africa to harness its unique strengths—its youthful digital-native population, vast natural resources, expansive markets, and strategic geopolitical position—to lead in the global AI landscape.
Vision and Mission
The Continental AI Strategy aligns with the AU Agenda 2063’s vision of a prosperous and integrated Africa. It seeks to leverage AI to empower people, drive economic growth, and foster a cultural renaissance. The strategy envisions an Africa where responsible, ethical, and African-centric AI is the axis of inclusive growth, resilience, and socio-economic development. By 2030, the strategy aims to position the continent as a key player in the global AI landscape, accelerating social and economic transformation and promoting cultural renewal.The mission of the AI Strategy is to harness AI for the rapid acceleration of Africa’s development. It aims to minimize the risks that AI poses to African societies while enhancing the AI capabilities of AU Member States. The strategy is committed to promoting an ethical, responsible, and inclusive AI that addresses Africa’s challenges and leverages its opportunities.
Guiding Principles
The Continental AI Strategy is guided by several high-level principles, each reflecting Africa’s commitment to ethical and inclusive AI development:

Local First: AI production, development, use, and assessment will prioritize addressing African challenges with African solutions. This principle emphasizes the growth of local talent and ecosystems to advance AI solutions that serve public value and respect cultural values.People-Centered: AI should promote inclusive growth, sustainable development, well-being, and cultural renaissance.
